Good exposure - II

Many people have approached me with queries related to Exposure in Digital Photography.

Most of the cameras today come equipped with Automated exposure control. One can see a green color Rectangle on the Mode dial of the camera. Selecting this option will enable you to take quiet reasonably good pictures under normal conditions. However to deal with critical light conditions one has to use other features of the camera to avail optimum quality in the pictures.
To start with –
1. If there is very bright background in the frame (of LCD screen), one will end up with extremely dark faces or ‘Subject’ if we opt for the automatic exposure mode.
2 Similarly on the other side if there is a black or very dark background – selecting Automatic exposure will produce very bright – or rather unnatural brightness of the main ‘Subject’.
In such situations we should take advantage of the other available options in the Exposure menu.
In our camera MENU when we click on EXPOSURE. a drop down menu shows us the following options:

[ 0 EV ],
[+0.3 EV ],
[+0.7 EV]
[+1.0 EV ]
[+1.3 EV ]
[+1.7 EV]
[+2.0 EV ]
these are to increase Exposure.
Similarly we have
[-0.3 EV ]
[-0.7 EV ]
[-1.0 EV ]
[-1.3 EV ]
[-1.7 EV ]
[-2.0 EV ]
these are used to reduce Exposure.

If we use these values wisely we can improve our pictures to a great extent.

In the case ‘1’ above we can increase our exposure by at least +1.0 EV so that our main Subject can appear with normal brightness in the picture.
And in case ‘2’ above we can reduce our exposure by -1.0 EV to get normal brightness of main Subject again.
Fortunately in a Digital Camera we can pre-visualize this on our LCD screen and so can adjust the exposure accordingly.

Another important feature is contrast. In extremely bright Sunlight conditions we find contrast on a higher side. It is better to try with lower contrast also. We can opt from ‘+‘ or ‘O’ or ‘-‘
LEARNING IN PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY IS AS IMPORTANT AS ANY OTHER SUBJECT. IN MY PREVIOUS WRITE UP I HAD MENTIONED ABOUT THE PROGRESS IT HAS MADE EVER SINCE IT’S INCEPTION. TO COPE UP WITH THE MODERN TRENDS. IT IS NOW ESSENTIONIAL TO KEEP PACE OR RATHER FASTER PACE WITH THE LATEST IN TECHNOLOGY. GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN WE HAD TO WAIT FOR THE FAVOURABLE LIGHTING CONDITIONS TO AVAIL GOOD RESULT IN OUR PHOTOGRAPHS. TODAY A LOT CAN BE MANUPULATED THROUGH TECHNICAL MEANS AND THEIR KNOWLEDGE. MANY NEW GADGETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE. AND MOREOVER MANY NEW FEATURES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE CAMERA ITSELF WHICH CAN HELP US IMPROVE OUR PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE SHOOTING STAGE INSTEAD OF IMPROVING ON THE PRINTS LATER. AND THAT COME TO THE CONCLUSION THE VERY BASIC – UNDERSTANDING LIGHT. FOR NO PHOTOGRAPHY IS POSSIBLE WITHOUT LIGHT – THE REQUIRED INTENSITY OF LIGHT. WHETHER IT IS SIMPLE DOCUMENTATION OF OUR SUBJECT OR OUR EXPRESSION AND/ OR IMPRESSION OF THE SCENE, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE LIGHT AND THAT ONLY WILL ENABLE US TO PRESENT OR EXPRESS OURSELF IN THIS WONDERFUL MEDIUM.
PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEEN THE FAMOUS MOVIE FROM RAJ KAPOOR JI - “SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM” CANNOT FORGET THAT BEAUTIFUL MORNING SCENE OF THE TITLE SONG. THE BEAUTIFUL MORNING EFFECT WAS ENHANCED BY USING A GRADUATION FILTER IN RED AND GREEN. THE WHOLE PICTURISATION OF THE SONG WAS DOMINATED BY THIS MORNING EFFECT TO MATCH THE MESMERISING VOICE OF LATAJI.

WHILE TAKING STILL PHOTOGRAPHS WE CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MANY SUCH CREATIVE TECHNIQUES. AFTERALL A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH IS ALWAYS A WELL BALANCED COMBINATION OF TECHNIQUE, CREATIVITY AND COMPOSITIONS.

My entry in your club

My entry in this blogger's list is with intention to help those who are fond of photography and have queries about this subject but do not know whom to ask. I welcome readers and will be too happy to help them to whatever extent I can.

The field of Photography is so very intresting and so vast that you can call it a never ending experience. After spending so many years in this I still find something new to learn each day.

I am sure I will be able to satisfy at least a few of your queries to at least some extent.

-HAPPY SHOOTING-
